VIDEOS: Awesome footage shows Cork fellas swimming with basking sharks

Alan Loughnane

We would love to have been there…

In weather like we’ve been having for the last week, it’s important to keep cooled off by whatever means necessary, even if it means entering the water with sharks.

Alex Barry, Sandy Rimmington and Andrew Welland captured some great videos of themselves swimming down in Roches Point, Cork Harbour next to some massive basking sharks.

A basking shark is the largest fish in the northern Atlantic and the second largest in the world. They can grow up to ten metres in length.

Although they’re harmless to humans, feeding mostly on plankton, it’s an amazing sight to see them so close to Irish shores and even more incredible to be able to swim up close and personal with them.

Alex, Sandy and Andrew, you’ve just had an unforgettable swim that very few Irish people have had the pleasure of experiencing, just leave it at that though, don’t go swimming with any other more… dangerous sharks.
