You’ve been washing AND drying your face wrong this entire time

Eoghan Doherty

It’s time to face the facial facts…

You fool. You clean, lavender-smelling, hygiene-concious fool.

It seems stuffy-wuffy scientists are here to burst our bubble again, as a group of beauty experts have revealed that we’ve all been washing and drying our faces in a damaging way this entire time.

Washing

If you, like a lot of other people, wash your face while you’re having a shower, THEN YOU’RE DOING FACE-WASHING WRONG.

We are, of course, assuming that you do shower yourself at all, maybe even every four days or so?

Speaking to Gloss, Dr Elizabeth Tanzi, co-director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery, explained that you should wash your face at the sink instead of in the shower.

“You can gauge the temperature more effectively and should use lukewarm to cold water, which is better for delicate faces.”

Amandine Isnard, Head of Product Development for EVE LOM, added that “a cold finish stimulates circulation and can be hugely beneficial to the overall glow of your skin.”

Glowing skin, eh?

A third person who’s obviously an expert in washing themselves, Joanna Vargas, also stressed that you should “always wash your face at night before bed. Your body repairs itself at night and that won’t happen without you removing all the dirt and grime of the day.”

“Unless your skin is super oily, simply splashing water on your face in the morning is fine. For skin that breaks out regularly, you need to thoroughly cleanse twice a day.”

Drying your face

Not content with just revolutionising the washing world, Vargas added this about drying your face; “Instead of drying your face with your bath towel, use a paper towel instead.”

“If you are breaking out and use the same towel on your face for a few days, it will spread the bacteria—making the breakout even worse. A paper towel can be thrown away after use, so it helps to keep your complexion clean and clear.”

What!? Don’t use our favourite towels? Is nothing sacred?
