As news broke of Fabio Capello's shocking resignation last night during ITV's FA Cup coverage, the TV station's pundit and former Irish captain Roy Keane was typically frank in his assessment.
"Capello is a strong character and obviously thought his authority was questioned with John Terry losing the captaincy," said Keane last night," referring to the fact that Capello left his post after the English FA stripped Terry of the captaincy as he is awaiting trial over a race row with QPR's Anton Ferdinand.
"You've got to admire him. He stuck to his guns. They went over his head, taking the captaincy off Terry. Obviously they've asked him to apologise and he's gone.
"It's been a nightmare for everybody - Capello, the FA. Terry obviously has to face trial in July and the FA thought it was the right action to strip him of the captaincy but Capello thought his authority was questioned.
Keane had some also choice words for former teammate Wayne Rooney, as the Manchester United striker had earlier tweeted: "Gutted capello has quit. Good guy and top coach. Got to be english to replace him. Harry redknapp for me."
"Wayne should keep his nose out of it," said Keano. "He didn't do enough on the pitch when Capello was manager." Ouch.
