He scored a penalty and managed to floor about a third of the opposition team, all in about two minutes. It was certainly an eventful Galway hurling county final for Loughrea’s Johnny Maher yesterday.
Maher’s Loughrea side were up against St. Thomas' in the Galway Hurling County Final yesterday and with Loughrea chasing the game in the dying minutes, they began to rain ball in on top of the big full-forward.
With only three minutes left, Loughrea were two goals down but Maher gave them a glimmer of hope by somehow claiming the ball in front of goal amidst a sea of St. Thomas' bodies and winning a penalty.
It was after that incident that the fun started. After getting up off the ground, Maher felled two St. Thomas' players with a couple of swings of his hurley, but after consulting with his umpires the referee took no action and allowed Maher to take the penalty, which he duly converted with aplomb.
Maher wasn’t finished yet, however and went on to clatter into a few more opposition players, including one who he took out with a fairly blatant trip right in front of the referee, who once again took no action against him.
In fairness to Maher, he had a great game, scoring 2-2 in total, and he was obviously a marked man, but how he escaped censure from the officials we have no idea.
In any event, St. Thomas' went onto win a cracking encounter by 3-11 to 2-11, claiming their first ever senior Galway hurling title in the process.
Check out Maher’s few minutes of madness in the video above.
