We can expect a lot more competition in the coming weeks, but so far Donegal are well ahead in the most important battle of this month… the battle to have the best All-Ireland Final song.
With an extra week to prepare Donegal have the edge in this particular head to head, but that would be overlooking the fact that Mayo have been in this position on four separate occasions since Donegal’s last All-Ireland Final appearance in 1992, so they’ve plenty of form when it comes to god-awful GAA songs.
Many of you will be familiar with the refrain ‘Mayo, Mayyoooo, Sam Maguire’s coming home to Mayo’ while ‘Sam Maguire, my heart's on fire’ didn’t figure as prominently on the public consciousness.
Neither song was anything to write home about, however, and the same can be said for the most recent effort coming out of the wesht, Mike Denver’s ‘Mayo are Back’, which, you may have already figured, goes to the air of ‘Baby Come Back’ made famous by Eddy Grant and the Equals, Pato Banton and UB40 amongst others.
We’ll let you judge it for yourself after having a listen in the video above, but somehow we don’t think it will replace ‘The Green and Red of Mayo’ as the de facto anthem for Mayo supporters.
Unfortunately, there is bound to be an unlimited supply of songs coming out of both counties in the next three weeks, one of the many reasons why this All-Ireland football final can’t come quickly enough.
