Gas Boilers: Is it time for a service or an upgrade?

There’s nothing like a good scrappage scheme. And they don't just stop at cars, either. How about a boiler scrappage scheme? Step this way.

JOE

There’s nothing like a good scrappage scheme. Remember the car scrappage scheme that ended last year? You got a lovely new car and got rid of your rusty old piece of… It felt like a double win, right?

Well now, the good folk over at Electric Ireland are offering you the chance to get rid of your old boiler that’s seen better days while getting a brand new highly efficient one fitted instead.

They’re a good-hearted, those people at Electric Ireland. And how do we know this? Because they’re offering you €500 when you scrap your old boiler for a new more energy efficient boiler and heating controls.

Most boilers that have notched up a few years of service operate at a low efficiency, which means they’re wasting precious energy for no reason. Boilers like that will waste a wad of your money; a new one could help you save up to 25 per cent on your home heating bill.

The typical cost of installing a high efficiency boiler and heating controls for a three- or four-bedroom semi-detached house is around €3,900. However, with Electric Ireland’s discount of €500, and an SEAI grant of up to €560, the final cost to you could be around €2,850, giving you a potential saving of up to €1,060.

And that’s only on the cost of installation – the savings will keep on coming with the performance of your new and efficient boiler.

If you want to make those savings you’d be well advised to act fast, as the special €500 scrappage scheme for your old boiler is only valid until April 14.

What’s that you say? You already have a brand spanking new boiler? Well good for you. That doesn’t mean you should just forget about it, as regular services are required to ensure that it’s working 100 per cent. Regular check ups will improve the safety of your boiler and keep it nice and efficient. Which will also be keeping more money in your wallet, of course.
