With more than a million souls packed around each side of the Liffey, there are plenty of Dublin-ese words to go around.
As part of 7UP Free's 'Irish It Up' campaign we take a look at some words you should only hear around the capital.
While other places (we’re looking at you Cork) think they are the best place in Ireland for some clever bits of local phraseology, we all know that you can’t beat Dublin.
The sheer concentration of people, of every sort, in one relatively small space leads to a diversity of language and word play that simply can’t be beat. In fact, there’s so much Dublin lingo, we’ve had to split them in two.
Ah here
Made famous by a certain stunned Talbot Street pedestrian, this phrase ca be pretty much used in any situation. Long queue at the bar; ah here! Step in some dog sh*t; ah here! See two lads knocking the crap out of each other in the city centre; ah here! Truly a phrase for all occasions.
Leggit
Run very fast. For the bus for example. Then the poxy driver doesn’t stop, leading to the use of ah here. See above.
Poxy
Dublin bus drivers or anyone or anything else that is not up to scratch. See above.
Aggro
How you feel when something poxy happens. See above
Bogger/culchie
Someone who dares to come from outside the M50.
Gouger
The sort of person who might try and scare the beejaysus out of a bogger. See above.
Beejaysus
A bit like ah here. See above
They were in the nip
We think it’s Dublin originally but Fr Dougal Maguire probably owns it now.
