Heineken Cup: Mixed results for Munster and Ulster

Ulster managed to put Bath out of the Heineken Cup, while Munster picked up a valuable bonus point away to Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium.

Bath 22-26 Ulster

Bath got off to a flying start, when hooker Lee Mears played in Australian winger Matthew Carraro who went over in the very first minute. Ulster responded with a try of their own in the 12th minute through Robbie Diack after some great work from fly-half Ian Humphries.

The converted try was sandwiched between two Olly Barkley penalties for Bath. Humphries kicked over two more pens before half-time, and Barkley one.

A Nevin Spence try and a penalty by Humphries in early stages of the second half put the northern province in a commanding position. Bath responded with a penalty and a try from Matt Banahan, leaving Barkley the chance to put them ahead with a conversion.

He missed, however, and the in form Humphries scored another penalty in the 73rd minute to give Ulster the victory. The result, Ulster's second over Bath in the Heineken Cup this year, puts the English side out of the competition and gives Ulster a great chance of progressing.

Ospreys 19-15 Munster

The Welsh side were victorious today, but Munster won't be completely unsatisfied after coming away with a valuable bonus point at the Liberty Stadium.

Ronan O'Gara opened the scoring in the third minute with a penalty, before Dan Biggar equalised with his first of four three-pointers. The Irish side took the lead again in the 22nd minute, when Tony Buckley went over after some great work from Sam Tuitupou.

Dan Biggar levelled things up in the 27th minute when he converted a Kristian Phillips, before a Biggar penalty put the Ospreys ahead before half time. The fly-half increased the lead to six in the 13th minute of the second half, before Keith Earls went over for Munster after a flowing passing move.

Ronan O'Gara failed to convert, however, and Munster remained a point behind, and another Biggar penalty 14 minutes from time was enough to guarantee the Osprey's victory. Munster's bonus point keeps them ahead of the Welsh team in their Heineken Cup group, and two points behind Toulon who hammered London Irish 38-17 today.
