“Have you read it?”
Hands up if you’ve ever lied in response to this question. There’s no shame in it. Sometimes we lie just to keep the conversation flowing, sometimes we lie to sound a little bit smarter than we really are, but all of us have, at point or another, lied about reading a book that we never actually read.
The Reading Agency surveyed 2,000 adults and found that a staggering 64% of people between the ages of 18-24 lie about their reading habits. They also found that two-thirds of people wish that they read more, with 48% of respondents saying they just don’t have the time.
Indy100 reported the 13 books that people are most likely to lie about having read — so if someone tells you they’ve read any of these, be sure to ask a follow-up question:
- James Bond books, Ian Fleming
- Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien
- The Chronicles of Narnia, CS Lewis
- The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown
- The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins
- Trainspotting, Irvine Welsh
- The Wizard of Oz, L Frank Baum
- Bridget Jones’s Diary, Helen Fielding
- The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Stieg Larsson
- The Godfather, Mario Puzo
- One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey
- Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn
- The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini
