Celebrate World Whiskey Day in style.

Saturday is World Whiskey Day so that’s a pretty good excuse to enjoy a wee dram. George Bernard Shaw described whiskey as “liquid sunshine” and we’re not about to argue with a literary icon.

Forget gin – whiskey is currently enjoying a serious revival. Some amazing small distillers have come out of the woodwork in recent years and the big guns are producing some fantastic limited editions and innovative blends. Countries like Japan are also rising up and taking on the traditional superpowers of Ireland and Scotland.

So what new whiskeys should be on your bucket list? Carry Out Off Licence has a huge selection of fine whiskeys so we called by to pick out five recommendations for you to enjoy on World Whiskey Day.

1. Kilbeggan Traditional Irish Whiskey

This blended Irish whiskey is double distilled, which is something that’s more commonly done in Scotland and the US. Fans of the double distil claim that this leaves more of the natural flavours in the whiskey. This warming blend offers plenty of flavour and some nice oaky flavours if you don’t want to splash out on a premium whiskey.

2. Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition

Hmmm… beer. Do you enjoy having a whiskey chaser with a craft beer? Well, why not combine the two with this follow-up to Jameson’s popular Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition? Jameson Irish Whiskey is finished in craft IPA barrels to infuse it with hints of citrus and a fruity finish. Fans of Jameson will love this subtle twist on its signature smooth taste.

3. West Cork 10 Year Old Single Malt

West Cork in the house! If you feel like treating yourself, why not stretch to this 10-year-old single malt. Aged in first-fill bourbon casks, it offers notes of chocolate, vanilla and warming spice. Put in simple terms, that means it’s a quality single malt whiskey that won’t break the bank.

4. Roe & Co

This premium Irish whiskey is a newcomer to the market but that doesn’t mean that you should underestimate it. Aged in first-fill bourbon barrels, it’s a blend of spice and sweet, fruity notes. This new kid on the block is an easy-drinking option that will appeal to whiskey newbies and veterans alike.

5. Redbreast Sherry Finish Lustau Edition

Redbreast Sherry Finish Lustau Edition is matured in bourbon and sherry casks for nine to 12 years before being finished for one extra year in first-fill sherry butts. That’s a lot of work but it produces a distinctive and memorable take on the iconic Redbreast character. This premium whiskey won a Gold Medal at the Irish Whiskey Awards 2016 and was Irish Whiskey of the Year at the Whiskey Advocate Awards 2017.
