5 mistakes everyone has made while on a first date

Can we ask you out?

JOE

First dates… sometimes they’re easy and sometimes they’re as difficult as finding a Cork person who prefers Dublin.

Pioc do Ride has been making first dates even more cringe with their fantastic new TG4 show. In it, a single lad or lassie will examine the car of three other singletons to get a view of what they’re like. Then they pick one of the lucky car owners as their date.

Awkward? Yes. Hilarious? Definitely. To celebrate this great show, we’ve decided to put together a list of the mistakes every man has made on at least one first date.

Making your job sound fancier than it is

She asked you ‘what do you do?’ You said you’re a ‘creative numerical engineer for a clothing manufacturer’ which translates to normal speak as: you work on the tills in a clothes shop.

Picking the wrong place

Not knowing a great deal about the person is often an unfortunate side effect of first dates. Hence, why some of us have a tendency to get the location a little wrong. For instance, I once brought a first date for a meal at a BBQ place… she was vegan. Another one of the JOEs once brought a first date to see the movie Blue Valentine, which is probably the worst date movie ever made.

Being awkward over the cheque

Do you pay? Do you ask for half? Is it rude to just pay? How much for do you tip? The etiquette for these things is constantly changing and quite frankly, we are flummoxed. OK, we’ll pay but we’re not tipping.

The goodbye

This has ended with that awkward hug/kiss/bang-of-heads more often than we’d care to admit. First dates are awkward even if the date has gone well.

The when do you text after?

You want to keep seeing this person as the first date went well. When do you text? A day seems too eager and a week seems like you’ve completely forgot they exist. It’s a tricky tight-rope.

This is all quite stressful, ain’t it? You could just stay in and watch Pioc do Ride on TG4 on tonight at 9:30pm.

Yeah, that seems like a way easier idea.
