The John Lewis Christmas ad is here, and it ticks all the boxes.
The UK department store is known for its elaborate Christmas ads and its release every year has become a bit like the Coca-Cola truck ad in acting as barometer for the beginning of the festive season.
Snow-covered houses in some kind of mythical old European city, a girl whose best friend is an adorable dragon called Edgar who keeps burning things down, a slowed-down piano version of a classic song… All the boxes.
This year it’s ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling’ by REO Speedwagon, by the way, which is an undeniable banger.
Anyway, Edgar seems to suffer from an excitability that sees him unable to control the dragon fire in his nostrils and he comes pretty close to giving ye olde town the King’s Landing treatment on several occasions. He gets ostracised and it’s up to his best friend to find a way to give his life some meaning again.
Thankfully, as you’d expect from a John Lewis advert, all’s well that end’s well and Edgar ends up finding a way to prove his value to the town.

Reaction to the ad (15k likes in under an hour) suggests that Edgar is going to be a pretty in-demand toy this Christmas. John Lewis, you’ve done it again.
Still, this ad will probably give you flashbacks if you still haven’t come to terms with how Game of Thrones ended.
