There are certain things that we only ever think of at Christmas.
Stockings on the fireplace, Brussels sprouts and Cliff Richard songs have a small window of acceptability during the month of December.
Certain drinks also come into their own during the holiday season. And, like that terrible jumper you got from your Auntie Mary, you then forget about them for the rest of the year.
With Christmas fast approaching, we’ve come up with a list of classic Christmas drinks to give you some seasonal inspiration.
Mulled wine

“Feigning joy and surprise, at the gifts we despise, over mulled wine.”
Mulled wine is as Christmassy as arguments and disappointing presents, as this song by The Darkness suggests.
It’s basically warm red wine with spices and fruit slices. Some people get very creative with their recipes but the one guarantee is that your house will smell of wine for days after making it.
Eggnog
Eggnog is one of those drinks that you always see on festive TV shows or films.
The fact that you put eggs, milk and cream into it makes it the perfect drink for a season of eating, drinking and general indulgence.
Still, eggnog is a bit like Santa. It’s all the rage for one month but it would be weird to mention it during the rest of the year.
Craft beer
We’ve become something of a craft beer nation in Ireland so it seems only fitting that we add a craft beer to the list. If you’re looking for a seasonal tipple to enjoy, an obvious choice is Fairy Ale of New York.
This tribute to the classic Pogues song is a Christmas pale ale (IPA) that’s been created by Molloys Liquor Stores and Rascals Brewing. It’s also a great stocking filler, as you can see!
And unlike many of the drinks on this list, you can actually drink it in a warm room without breaking into uncontrollable sweats.
Hot whiskey
The hot totty is another warming drink that gets into its groove at this time of year. The basic ingredients are whiskey, hot water, sugar and a slice of lemon with whole cloves.
Yet people can be very particular about how you make it.
Just like the classic “sugar before the tea bag” debate, best friends have been known to fall out over the perfect way to make a hot whiskey.
Hot buttered rum
This combo of rum, butter, hot water/cider and a sweetener is certainly an indulgent seasonal treat.
It’s fair to say that the idea of drinking a hot drink with butter may not be everyone’s idea of a good time!
Yet, just like bulletproof coffee, hot buttered rum has a loyal festive following. Unlike bulletproof coffee, it’s definitely not going to make you feel any more energetic.
Mulled apple juice
Christmas drinks don’t have to be alcoholic, of course. This non-alcoholic number has all the benefits of a hot drink without the risk of a hangover.
It’s as simple as heating apple juice, orange peel, cinnamon stick and cloves.
It’s a nice alternative if you get sick of drinks that are loaded with dairy products. It’s also a handy choice if you don’t want your kitchen smelling like it’s been washed with a wine-soaked mop.
Mulled Port
You may be noticing a trend here. For some people, it’s just not a Christmas drink unless you can scald your mouth with it!
Hot port is a variation on the hot whiskey except it sometimes uses honey instead of sugar.
Christmas is also the only time that you or your mates will ever drink port, talk about port or have long discussions about what port actually is.
Molloys Liquor Stores have everything you need to make your favourite Christmas drinks.
