A change to the legislation may be needed.

There’s reportedly a loophole that could see thousands of penalty points wiped out but we don’t know what it is yet.

The Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe is expected to brief the Cabinet about the issue today and everything is being kept hush-hush for fear the loophole might be exploited.

It’s understood that it involves the new laws which increased penalty points for offences like using your phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt and speeding.

According to the Irish Independent, Paschal Donohoe has now asked “urgent” legal advice on whether the flaw can be removed by changing the legislation.

We’re expecting a lot of this outside that Cabinet meeting today.
