Some county accents are thicker than others.

When it comes to the most desirable Irish brogue, Donegal usually reigns supreme as plenty of people regularly rank it as the sexiest accent in the land.

This being said, ask yourself this, what’s the hardest accent to understand? You know, something that’s so bad that you might require subtitles to fully comprehend what’s being said to you.

We all know that every county accent has its unique charms but some tones take a little bit longer to decipher.

Well, Pure Telecom have conducted a survey of 1,005 people to discover which Irish accents frequently baffle virtual assistants.

FYI, a virtual assistant would incorporate software like Siri and devices like Alexa. Basically, anything that you have to speak into and command.

In an unusual reversal, those living in Donegal actually experience the most difficulties with their accents being understood because 39% of users said that they are never, or only occasionally, understood by their chosen virtual assistant software.

This is followed by Clare (36%) and Kerry (33%).

In contrast, other counties experience far fewer issues.

The best-spoken/most understood accent in the country, according to this survey, is Laois, with 47% claiming to ‘always’ be understood by their assistant. That is followed by Roscommon and Carlow (39%); and Limerick (35%).

Overall, the survey discovered that 32% of Irish people cite the programmes’ inability to understand their accent and way of speaking as a significant drawback of using them.

The people in Laois must be shouting from the rooftops with this news.

If they do, there’s no doubting that we’ll hear them…this survey proves it.
