A J1 with a difference: Here’s how you can do a job you actually love while in America

JOE

What’s the first thing that comes into your mind when you think of J1 holidays?

“Great craic and unforgettable experiences?”

With thanks to Usit, you can now add ‘an enjoyable job doing what you love’ to that list.

Here are two fantastic places you can work if you’re going on a J1 this summer.

CampUSA.ie

Each year, hundreds of thousands of kids go to one of the thousands of summer camps located across the USA.

And every year, CampUSA.ie employs counsellors to work for up to 10 weeks in their traditional camps.

As a counsellor, your main job is to make camp a fun, friendly, and a safe environment for campers.

This is a job where you’ll spend every day leading kids, doing what you love, and constantly trying new things.

You’ll either be hired as an activity instructor or a general counsellor, depending on your skills and preferences. Whatever your job title, a camp counsellor is a jack-of-all-trades, and no two days will be the same.

Perfect for the J1.

Coach Soccer USA

The second programme is for football lovers who fancy spending their summers working with kids outdoors.

As a coach, you’ll be training teams on a daily basis and have your weekends to yourself.

Participants will spend between 6-12 weeks working. After your coaching contract is finished, you will still have up to 30 days to stay and explore the US.

Each soccer camp is non-residential and will include boys and girls aged anywhere from 3-18 years. Soccer coaches typically stay with a different host family from week to week so meals and accommodation are provided.

Prior to becoming a soccer coach candidates must be assessed to see if they have the skills to train and coach soccer.

During the assessment coaches will be asked to showcase their skills and once they are passed you get hired on the spot – no more worrying about a summer job!

Tomorrow there is a Coach Soccer USA assessment day in UCD at 12pm. You can sign up here.

From €999 you get individual soccer coaching placement, J1 Camp Counsellor Work Papers, return flights (east coast), accommodation & meals, weekly wage of $170 – $250 depending on your age and experience plus loads more.
