They are loved up in Wicklow but Dublin comes out bottom of the romance stakes, according to Tesco at least.

It’s the season to splash a bit of cash on your nearest and dearest but if you happen to live in Dublin, and your other half shops in Tesco, prepare to be disappointed.

The supermarket chain has released some figures based on Valentine’s Day items sold last last year and the Indo has published them. It makes for grim reading for the capital’s romantics.

Seven Tesco stores in Dublin finished in the bottom 10 for sales of cards, chocolates and flowers in the lead up to the big day, including branches at Phibsboro, Clondalkin, Merrion, Jervis Street, Crumlin and Ballyfermot.

The biggest spenders were in Arklow, followed by Kilrush in Clare and Celbridge in Kildare.

Tesco also revealed a few more nuggets of info. Unsurprisingly, 33 per cent of all cards are sold at around 6pm on February 13 and men spend more than women on the card, on average €5.35 to €4 for women.

Tesco added that more husband cards are sold than wife cards, so there are some very awkward conversations in some houses.
