The average amount of money Irish couples spend on their wedding has been revealed

Conor Heneghan

It’s up on last year and by quite a hefty amount too.

Confirming the pretty well-known fact that Irish weddings are a bloody expensive business, a survey by Irish wedding website weddingsonline has revealed that Irish couples spend an average of just under €25,000 on their wedding day.

The survey found that the average spend on an Irish wedding, including a honeymoon, is €24,427, an increase of 8% on a similar survey from this time last year.

2,000 people took part in the survey, which was conducted this month, with half of participants admitting that they went over budget when splashing out on their big day.

To help out with the cost of the wedding, 17% of couples surveyed took out a loan, with 21% sharing the cost with their parents; 60% of couples, meanwhile, said they paid for it out of their own savings.

Some of the other findings from the survey, which you can see in full here, included the average number of guests (159), the most popular months for Irish weddings (July and August), the average price per guest for a meal (€66) and the average cost of a honeymoon (€5,028).

All food for thought if you’re thinking of tying the knot anytime soon; safe to say you better start saving.
