We’re feeling pretty Babashook right now…
If you haven’t seen, The Babadook is a horror movie that was released in 2014 to massive critical acclaim, and has already achieved cult status as one of – if not THE – best horror movies of the century so far.

On 30 October 2016 – someone was clearly watching horror movies getting ready for Halloween – a Tumblr post asking the question “Whenever someone says the Babadook isn’t openly gay it’s like?? Did you even watch the movie???” went somewhat viral, getting over 100,000 responses.
When someone responded to the question with a blanket “It is only a movie” response, the original poster replied “A movie about a gay man who just wants to live his life in a small Australian suburb? It may be ‘just a movie’ to you but to the LGBT community the Babadook is a symbol of our journey.”
From there, the virality of the concept grew, including someone mocking up a screengrab of The Babadook in the LBGTQ section of Netflix, claiming that “the B stands for Babadook”.
And from there it just ….. exploded.

June is Pride Month in the USA, and with Pride Marches happening all across the country, The Babadook sightings are now multiplying at an incredible rate, including the Massachusetts attorney-general Maura Healey claiming the creature as the face of the state’s celebrations:

The Babadook has been adopted as a Pride icon. In terms of LGBTQ history, it makes sense. https://t.co/wUCthjfXj9 pic.twitter.com/wiFp51jGxI
