If you are going to start 2014 a bit short on cash, then this is just bloody great news.

The Gaiety School of Acting, the National Theatre School of Ireland, will be hosting a series of ‘Try for Free’ hour long workshops for adults in Introduction to Drama, Acting for Camera, TV Presentation, Make a Movie in their Cork school, and for younger budding actors, there will be a Try for Free in Cork on January 4.

At the start of every new term the school offers complimentary taster sessions to prospective students so that they can get a feel for what is explored throughout the term in the workshops on offer. The 10-week courses themselves commence the following week from January 6 2014.

Their Complimentary ‘Introduction to Drama’ class takes place at 7pm and 8pm on January 2 (Cork) and January 7 (Temple Bar) and give students a practical, enjoyable and confidence building introduction to the craft of acting and improvising. ‘Acting for Camera’ provides students with the skills for screen acting whether it is for independent local movies, commercial, TV or the ‘Big Screen! This TRY FOR FREE will take place on Friday January 10 at 7pm and again at 8.30pm.

TV presentation is a popular course aimed at individuals interested in working in broadcasting media. In the past, it has been taught by independent television producer and director, Bill Hughes, TV3 Xposé presenter Lisa Cannon and media guru Alan Shortt. The TRY FOR FREE will take place at 7pm on Saturday January 4.

Make a Movie is suitable for those interested in everything film based. Whether it be screenplay writing, acting, film directing, cinematography or production design, this programme will tick all the boxes! This TRY FOR FREE will take place at The Granary Theatre, Mardyke on January 3 at 7pm.

People are encouraged to come along and take part in any one of these workshops. Due to popular demand it is recommended to call ahead and book a place in advance.

Patrick Sutton, Director of The Gaiety School of Acting – The National Theatre School of Ireland – insists ‘These free taster classes are a wonderful way of introducing people to the world of drama. Acting is not just about performing, it is about acquiring skills that enhance self-perception, encourage individuals to think creatively and overall improve your confidence!’
