Beating off stiff competition from bars around the country in the race for the best pubs in Ireland, Cork’s Cask has been named the 2018 Bar of the Year.

Out of over 500 entries, Cask was deemed to be the outstanding candidate in all areas with judges commenting particularly on its unique design.

The winners were revealed at a gala awards ceremony in the Clayton Hotel Burlington Road on Monday night.

Seeing as gin seems to be the up and coming drink in Ireland these days, Gin Library at Galgorm Resort & Spa in Antrim  took home Gin Bar of the Year (sponsored by Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin).

The Shelbourne Bar in Cork was named Whiskey Bar of the Year (sponsored by The Dubliner Whiskey), so a strong showing all round for the Rebel county.

It’s a good day for one bartender as Traford Murphy of Cork’s Ballymaloe House, was named named the Bushmills Cocktail Bartender of the Year.

One of the biggest awards went to An Púcan in Galway, as they won the public’s vote to claim the overall Southern Comfort People’s Choice Award as well as the award for the Connacht/Ulster region.

Dolan’s of Limerick (Munster), Devitts of Camden Street (Dublin) and Ireland’s highest pub Johnnie Fox’s (Leinster) rounded out the Southern Comfort People’s Choice winners.

Commenting on the winners, Katherine O’Riordan, Event Director said: “We are delighted that these awards give us the opportunity to showcase the very best bars, pubs and clubs this country has to offer.

Ireland is known the world over for our outstanding bars along with the craic they provide – if these winners are anything to go by, that reputation is in safe hands.”
