“The special relationship is with Ireland.” Bonnie Greer defends Ireland on The Ray D’Arcy Show

Defending Ireland has become a full time job for Bonnie Greer.

Since the British-American playwright and journalist turned in an iconic performance on BBC’s Question Time earlier this month, in which she informed her fellow panelists that “Britain doesn’t own Ireland, Ireland owes this country nothing,” Greer has become something of a hero on these shores.

She appeared on RTÉ’s Ray D’Arcy show last night, and once again won applause for her commentary on Anglo-Irish relations.

Greer explained that the UK would be unable to establish a trade deal with the United States after Brexit if the UK jeopardises the Good Friday Agreement.

“What people don’t realise is that Trump and Boris can sit down and sign an agreement, but that’s temporary, it has to be ratified by the House.

“It ain’t gonna happen. So, the friends of Ireland are Republicans, Democrats, independents… I’ve got Irish congresspeople who have been tweeting me saying ‘You’re right, it’s not gonna fly.'”

Referencing the old adage of Britain’s supposed “special relationship” with the US, Greer said “Britain needs to understand that the special relationship is with Ireland and when Americans talk about the old country, they’re talking about here.

“And people feel very strongly about it, I feel very strongly about it.”
