PETA want people to change the way they use everyday phrases to stop “speciesism”

Alan Loughnane

This seems… extreme.

The activist group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), has a problem with phrases it says are anti-animal.

The group suggested that some commonly-used turns of phrase are anti-animal and that they should be removed and replaced.

They are urging people, for example, to use phrases like ‘bringing home the bagels’ instead of ‘bringing home the bacon.’

Luckily, they’ve come up with some other ready-made replacements for the sayings you’ll be binning, which you can see below.

PETA’s Emily Rice told The West Australian the new suggestions would remove “speciesism” from conversations.

“Just as it became unacceptable to use racist, homophobic, or ableist language, phrases that trivialize cruelty to animals will vanish as more people begin to appreciate animals for who they are and start ‘bringing home the bagels’ instead of the bacon,” she said.

“With so much negativity in the world, why not lighten up, smile a little more, and use language in a way that encourages being kind to animals?”
