Cue comic book fans losing their minds...
There is very little that can surprise JOE in the world of comic books. Characters die and are reborn, normal people get superpowers, villains destroy the world on a daily basis etc, however, the news that Marvel Comics are recasting Thor as a woman did take us by surprise.
Marvel editor Wil Moss said that the new take was inspired by, "the inscription on Thor's hammer which reads, 'Whosoever holds this hammer, if
he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.
"Well, it's time to update that inscription. The new Thor continues Marvel's proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute – she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!"
The new take on the comic launches in October and it's sure to divide opinion amongst fans.
JOE hasn't read the comic books, although we do like the three movies featuring Chris Hemsworth as the Norse god, but we think it's hard to imagine a more masculine superhero than Thor.
We got the impression that the character was supposed to be this brutish, hammer-wielding son of Odin who rocks a rather fetching beard. Then again if they cast someone like Scarlett Johansson or Amber Heard in the role then we won't complain.
Maybe Marvel are just embracing the ethos of the modern man and moving with the times, although the more cynical amongst us, will probably think that they are just trying to capture a large female comic book buying audience. Take your pick.
