We all fancy ourselves as expert cocktail makers at some level.
We might not have the bottle-juggling skills but sure that’s just for show-offs. We still suspect that we have the taste buds of a drinks-mixing God and an instinctive understanding of how to blend drinks to make delicious cocktails.
The reality may be somewhat different. You spend 15 minutes adding a bit more of this and a bit more of that before ending up with something that tastes like sugared bog water.
Well, fear not because help is at hand.
We took a spin down to Jameson Distillery Bow St. to get a masterclass in cocktail making from their expert mixologist and we can now say that we’re pretty decent at mixing an ol’ cocktail.
Upon landing at the recently-reopened distillery, we were taken to the cocktail masterclass room by our mixologist, Donal. Their 90-minute Whiskey Shakers experience gave us a chance to learn how to mix three amazing Jameson cocktails – a Whiskey Sour, and Old-Fashioned and an Irish Punch.
The Whiskey Shakers masterclass lets you get to the heart of cocktail making, showing you how to use the bar tools involved and the right way to make classic or freshly-minted cocktails. You also get to sample the bitters and other ingredients to understand what makes the magic happen.
Learning to make the drinks is half the craic but an added bonus is that you get to sample the cocktails that you make. Who knew that learning could be such fun?
Afterwards, you’re given a handy recipe book to show you how to make all of the amazing cocktails that are on offer in their distillery. Your parties will never be the same again.
Finally, as an added treat, we were taken to the maturation room and allowed to sample whiskey directly from the cask. There’s something about doing this that makes you feel like you’ve been initiated into a secret society.
And in a way you have. You now have the tools to amaze women and make men jealous with your cocktail mixing genius. Or at least you have the skills to mix a tasty cocktail that everyone will enjoy drinking, which is half the battle!
