Are you counting down the days to your next holiday?

There’s nothing like having a holiday to look forward to. It gets you through those long days at work and those soft Irish days when the weather throws up some sideways rain to remind you that it’s winter.

If you’re planning a couple’s holiday in 2018, we’ve some romantic suggestions for you. We’ve included some perennial favourites, some emerging destinations and a few old favourites that have come back into fashion. Most importantly, they’re all great options if you want to get away with your other half for some well-deserved alone time.

1. The Algarve, Portugal

What: Portugal has become the place to go in recent times but the Algarve has always been a popular romantic destination. Golden beaches, enclosed bays, spectacular cliffs and beautiful waters make it an ideal destination for a beach holiday. Not to mention the incredible food and wine.

Why: There’s all of the above but the Algarve has plenty of other attractions. It’s perfect for a surfing or biking holiday and it’s also a great base from which to explore southern Portugal, see its historical sites or enjoy the local cuisine. You can choose from bustling, modern resorts or opt for a quieter traditional option, depending on whether you came to party or enjoy some quality time together.

2. Ibiza, Spain

What: Ibiza has become synonymous with DJs, clubbing and excess but there’s also another side to this beautiful island. Get away from clubbing heartland and you’ll find inland mountains, coastal walks, caves and countless beaches.

Why: The Vengaboys knew what they were talking about. Ibiza is a great place to go on holiday, whether you and your partner love dancing your socks off or chilling out in a sun-drenched paradise. So you can choose glowsticks and clubs or spa treatments and local delicacies at a luxury villa. Choosing to go on or offseason will very much dictate your options but it’s always a magical place to visit.

3. Kos, Greece

What: This Greek island offers amazing scenery, incredible traditional dishes that will blow your mind and enough culture to last you a lifetime. Whether you like sightseeing, activities or just want to sit back with a glass of wine, there’s something here for you.

Why: Greece may have dropped in popularity for a couple of years but Greek holidays are back with a bang. The Greek islands’ wealth of natural attractions makes them an obvious destination and Kos is one of the best. There is something for every couple on Kos, whether you fancy stretching out on a beautiful beach, checking out the lively nightlife, hiking into its rugged mountains or filling up your Instagram with shots of its historic ruins.

4. Dubrovnik, Croatia

What: Croatia has grown in popularity in recent years and Dubrovnik is one of the country’s crown jewels. The charming architecture, coastal location and unique attractions make it a must-see. It’s a city that you can’t help but fall in love with so it’s a natural haunt for lovers.

Why: The historical city’s limestone streets, beautiful old town and ancient walls make it a wonderful place for a romantic stroll. It’s also got a lively social scene to keep you entertained. The surrounding areas boast some wonderful coastal spots and great places to grab a bite. If you do go, make sure you take the cable car that runs to the top of Mount Srd, which overlooks the city.

5. Cancun, Mexico

What: You can enjoy white sand beaches and incredible restaurants that offer the best of food. Cancun’s enduringly popular resort area is ideally set up to give you a luxurious stay on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. Plus you can easily dip into the lively downtown area for a taste of how the locals live.

Why: This is a chance to explore a perfect coastal location that offers sun, sea and heat all year around. You can explore the coral reefs or try the watersports on offer if you want to get adventurous. It’s also a great base from which to do a day trip – so you can go swimming with whale sharks from Isla Holbox or head to the nearby national park of Isla Contoy.

6. Sorrento, Italy

What: This coastal resort town hugs a cliffside and offers views of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. It combines a historical centre with cobblestone streets and everything you’d want from a Mediterranean holiday.

There’s the fantastic food, wine, culture and you’re only a hop, skip and a jump from amazing attractions like the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and the island of Capri. 7. Bohinj, Slovenia
