Crying while cutting onions could be a thing of the past with this useful hack

Alan Loughnane

Give it a go…

There’s probably a lot of you out there who dread chopping onions. It can turn even the hardiest of eyes into a weeping mess, and God help you if you’re silly enough to touch your eyes during the process.

But there could be a way to stop yourself from crying while chopping your onions, according to Lifehacker.

They recommend putting your onions in the freezer for 15 minutes before chopping them.

While this may make them slightly more difficult to cut and remove the outermost layer, it significantly reduces the irritation to your eyes.

The onion-chopping induced tears is caused because of a volatile sulphur compound in the onion, and when it reaches your eyes, it causes them to sting and tear.

When you cut onions, this gas is released. But if you freeze the onion, this slows down enzyme activity and reduces the release of the compound.

So not only does this work like other methods such as wearing goggles, it can also protect other people in the room from the tear-inducing onions.
