Democracy collapses as Boaty McBoatface won’t be called Boaty McBoatface

Carl Kinsella

Democracy is a joke.

The public had been asked by the Natural Environment Research Poll to vote on the name of a £200m polar research ship, and 120,000 votes in were cast online for Boaty McBoatface.

Now, in the greatest subversion of public will in the history of the world, that verdict has been officially ignored – and the vessel will instead be named the RRS David Attenborough.

Don’t get us wrong, David Attenborough is an incredibly cool guy, but the people demanded Boaty McBoatface, and the people have been ignored – which makes us extremely worried about the legitimacy of the upcoming Brexit referendum.

As a minor concession, a subsea ROV will be named Boaty McBoatface – but remotely operated underwater vehicles are not boats, so frankly, that’s just ridiculous.

Attenborough has said he feels honoured, going on to say “I hope that everyone who suggested a name will feel just as inspired to follow the ship’s progress as it explores our polar regions.”
