Dog walker, 28, identified as woman killed in savage attack as eight dogs are seized

Steve Hopkins

Police have seized eight dogs as they try and work out what happened.

A 28-year-old dog walker has been identified by police as the woman killed in a dog attack in Surrey in the UK on Thursday.

Armed police and the National Police Air Service (NPAS) were called to Gravelly Hill, Caterham, at 2.45 pm following reports of a dog attacking people.

Surrey police said on Friday that despite the “best efforts” of paramedics, the woman, from London, died.

The woman was believed to have been walking a number of dogs at the time of the incident, police said, and her next of kin have been notified of her death and are being “supported by specialist officers”.

A second woman also required treatment for dog bites but has since been discharged from the hospital.

Reports suggest at least one of the dogs unleashed the attack, causing fatal injuries and significant blood loss.

Eight dogs were detained at the scene by officers and remain in the custody of police and their owners have been “identified and are being kept informed as the investigation continues”.

Police believe they have all the dogs involved in the incident.

No arrests have been made.

A police cordon was to remain in place at Gravelly Hill on Friday as forensic work is carried out.

Inspector Lyndsey Whatley, Borough Commander for Tandridge, said: “This is a tragic incident where a young woman has sadly lost her life and our thoughts are with her family and friends.

“I know that yesterday’s events will be of real concern to the local community and I would like to reassure residents that we are confident all the dogs involved are in the custody of police whilst we investigate the circumstances of what has happened.

“Officers will remain in the area of Gravelly Hill today whilst enquiries continue and if you have any information but have not yet spoken to police then please contact us.”

Jenny Gaffney, Liberal Democrat Councillor at Tandridge District Council, said the community has been left shocked by the attack: “It’s absolutely shocking and it’s incredibly sad for the poor lady who died and the woman who has been injured.

“We’re all waiting to find out what happened. There’s an awful lot of speculation on social media at the moment which isn’t helpful for the family of the poor lady who died.”

The death of Ann Dunn, 65, in October was the ninth fatal attack in 2022, making it the deadliest year on record.
