WATCH: Dublin Chamber creates futuristic vision of what the capital will look like in 2050

More skyscrapers. A lot more skyscrapers.

Dublin 2050

Can you really see all this change happening in the space of 33 years?

Those old enough to remember will tell you that Dublin looked a lot different 33 years ago, in 1984, than it does today.

There were no Luas lines, no Spire and no Convention Centre, for example, but the differences between Dublin then and now are not quite as striking as what’s envisaged in a new video that imagines what the capital might look like in 2050.

Business group Dublin Chamber has used the opinions of more than 20,000 Dubliners to create a new thought-provoking video which showcases what Dublin might look like in the year 2050.

The video is based on the answers given by people to its Great Dublin Survey carried out over the summer months and features underground trains, flying cars and a lot of what Dublin currently doesn’t have, skyscrapers.

Iconic Dublin areas such as Grand Canal Dock and Merrion Square look a lot different when populated with giant buildings, while magnetic levitation trains departing from Connolly Station is a sight that would take some getting used to.

The Great Dublin Survey included questions about the technologies and advances that Dubliners think will change daily life in the coming years.

63% of respondents, for example, predicted that cash will be a thing of the past in 2050, more than three in five predicted a paperless society and more than half of those surveyed believe Artificial Intelligence will impact on daily life.

Dublin Chamber CEO Mary Rose Burke said: “The aim of The Great Dublin Survey was to capture the ideas, hopes, wants and aspirations of not just the people of Dublin, but also all those who feel a connection or who have an interest in the city’s future.”
