Dublin is one of the most expensive cities in the world for young people, new study finds

The capital’s cappuccinos aren’t too expensive, so at least there’s that…

Dublin is one of the most expensive cities for young people to live in, a new study has found.

The study by MoveHub titled ‘Where to move when you’re young and broke‘ found that Dublin was the second most unaffordable city ahead of London and trailing Sao Paolo in Brazil.

In total, 32 major global cities were assessed when it comes to rent, transport, food and cappuccinos, along with average monthly income and safety.

The number one slot went to Edinburgh, which was named the best city to move to in 2018, while the top ten included Vienna, Berlin, Madrid and Copenhagen, with the latter’s only fault being the fact that a cappuccino costs an average of €4.55.

But sure, nobody drinks those anymore. It’s all matcha lattes nowadays, so maybe the Danish capital might be a place worth considering since it was also named the safest place to live in Europe.

Another hotspot for broke millennials to consider is Berlin, which performed best for rent as a proportion of income, with most dwellers spending around 25% of their monthly salary on accommodation.

The only two non-European cities to crack the top 10 were Mumbai and Melbourne, while no US cities managed to make the rankings at all.

Commenting on the findings, Charlie Clissitt, lead researcher at MoveHud said:

“As people start the new year with new goals we see that January is one of the most popular months for people deciding to take the plunge and start planning a new exciting life abroad. We hope this guide will help any young people looking for a new adventure to choose their new city based on the real standard of living for young professionals.”
