How would you like to drive around in a brand new car for four months without having to spend a single cent on petrol or diesel? Well, you might want to check out the ESB’s Great Electric Drive

ESB announced today that for the second year running it is launching the Great Electric Drive, which will offer Irish drivers the opportunity to become an e-car ambassador and trial an electric vehicle for a four-month period during 2014/2015.

The selected e-car ambassadors will trial one of a selection of electric vehicles such as the BMW i3 (pictured above), the Citroen C Zero, the Mitsubishi iMiEV, the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SUV, the Nissan Euro LEAF, the Renault ZOE, or a Renault Kangoo Z.E. commercial electric van.

The ambassadors will be able to charge the electric vehicle at home or in their workplace at a dedicated e-car charge point. For longer commutes, ambassadors can avail of the smart public charging network located across the country.

Now, you might have to plan your route beforehand to ensure there’s a charge point along the way, but that will take you the same amount of time it takes to fill a tank of petrol. Trust us, we’ve done it before.

Speaking about the Great Electric Drive Dermot McArdle, Head of ESB e-cars (pictured below), said: “An electric car costs less than two cents a kilometre to fuel and the average motorist could achieve running cost savings of almost €2,300 a year. Electric cars offer very real significant savings to Irish motorists.”

ESB is calling on anyone who is interested in signing up to become an e-car ambassador and get into the electric driving seat to apply on esb.ie/GreatElectricDrive or go to ESB e-cars Facebook page www.facebook.com/ESBecars for more info.

The closing date for applications is March 4, 2014 so make sure you enter before then. The selected e-car ambassadors will be announced in April.
