A grounded reaction, to say the least.

On Thursday, the Naul family syndicate collected the whopping €175 million prize that they won in the recent EuroMillions draw.

One of the family members, Gerry, who was the first to find out that they had won the money, appeared on Today with Sean O’Rourke on Friday morning to discuss how life has been since the massive win.

Speaking about his wife’s reaction to the news, he said: “She could hardly talk, I was nearly going to get an ambulance for her.”

When the two checked to ensure that they really did have the right numbers, Gerry said that he thought to himself “Ah Jesus, is this real?”

The family also had a very Irish way of keeping the ticket safe, as they just put it in an Argos catalog and left it under the table. No better place.

Speaking about whether or not he could get any sleep that night, he said: “I probably had about six vodkas so I slept fairly alright”.

Despite the overwhelming joy that has come with the recent win, he said that he doesn’t want any drastic changes in his life: “I’d rather just go back to the way it was. I was happy enough before I won it, so I hope it doesn’t change too much.”

The family have not bought anything extravagant just yet, but he himself wants to buy a state of the art bike, as he is “mad into cycling”.

He reckons that the bike will cost around €14,000, so he’ll still have quite a bit leftover.

He said that he they had a number of charities that they were looking into donating money to, and he has absolutely no interest in moving out of The Naul.

He is more interested in being able to use the money to help others:

“The best thing of the whole lot is what you can do for other people. That’s the nicest thing about it.”
