Expectations v reality : Finishing College

The light at the end of the studying tunnel

Paul Moore

The light at the end of the studying tunnel.

Those college days are over and you’re ready to step into the world and conquer it like the absolute boss that you are but everything doesn’t always go to plan.

You may have some expectations which are a little left of centre.

Expectation: When you graduate with that fancy pants degree, employers will be so amazed by this Bachelors or Masters that they’ll instantly make you President of the company.

This small piece of paper guarantees your status as the king or queen of the corporate world and employers will worship at your feet.

Reality: Homer Simpson nailed it when he said ‘no matter how good you are at something, there’s always about a million people better than you”.

While you should be happy to get a job, you’ll still have to do stuff like filing papers, shredding documents and being cool with the fact that no one will remember your name.

Just know that everyone else has been in this position at some point. Don’t worry, it’s all part of climbing the ladder.

Expectation: You’ll be making loads of money.

Reality: You’ll earn enough to keep a roof over your head and food in your press but there will also be days when you can’t afford new socks.

In this event just wear odd ones to work or paint your ankles black. No one will know.

Money

Expectations: When you finally leave college, it signals a massive sea change in your behaviour because you now consider yourself to be a grown-up.

Reality: While this is true to a certain degree – those late Wednesday night parties are a thing of the past – things don’t really change that much.

Leaving college usually means that any Monday to Friday mischief is kept to a minimum but you’ll definitely appreciate your weekends more. It’s the only time when it’s possible to see if you can actually climb into your freezer.

Dancing

Expectations: What you’ve spent all those years in college studying will be in no way applicable to what you’re doing on a daily basis.

Reality: Some of your study is but there’s no book that can teach you how to escape an awkward conversation with your boss.

That’s just something that you’ll have to pick up on your own. Our suggestion? Just run and hide under some coats.

Vanish

Expectations: You’ll get this sort of reception when you finish college.

Reality: You’re so tired from doing your thesis or studying for those final exams that it’s more like this.

Expectations: You’ll lose contact with some of your closest college friends.

Reality: Your best friends will still be calling you and asking for €10, a place to sleep or a pair of shoes because an angry gorilla ran away with theirs. Never let these people go.
