General Election 2016: This is who the bookies are backing

JOE

Who is your money on for the general election?

Ladbrokes report that the candidate they’ve seen the most money for in the General Election betting is Fianna Fáil’s Micháel Martin.

The party leader has been popular across a number of markets, which has seen his price to be the next Taoiseach tumble from 14/1 in January to just 9/2, and he is now odds-on at 5/6 to be the next Tanaiste, having been backed from 7/4.

A weakening wager is for another Fine Gael – Labour coalition, which has been pushed way out in the betting to 6/1, from 9/4. In contrast, a Fine Gael – Fianna Fáil government has been a very popular punt, shortening to 8/11 from 13/8.

Fianna Fáil has been backed from 8/1 into 5/1 to win the most seats, while Enda Kenny’s reinstatement has drifted from 1/33 to 1/10.

Hayley O’Connor of Ladbrokes said: “Micháel’s been most popular in the betting and Fianna Fáil in general have been backed to perform better than was expected. We’d have had an easier job selling ice cubes this morning than laying wagers on another Fine-Gael – Labour coalition, with punters only interested in backing alternatives.”

If that all sounds a little complicated, watch the video below. It should give you a good indication of how it’s been going.
