Painting a radiator isn’t quite like painting your walls. Do it wrong and you could end up with massive air bubbles under the paint. So here’s how to do it properly in just five minutes.
If you’re doing a spot of painting around the home then take extra care when painting the radiators. You may have them hidden away out of view, but if you don’t and you paint them a*se-ways, then you’re in for a real eye sore in the middle of your room. So to avoid a shabby looking rad, here’s how to paint one properly in just five minutes… it may take a bit longer to dry.
What you’ll need:
Paint brush
Satinwood paint
Old sheet
What to do:
Step 1: Turn off the radiator
This may seem like a simple step but some people will try to paint over a hot radiator, so just be safe and make sure it’s definitely off, and cold, before you begin painting.
Step 2: Lay down your old sheet
Before you start it’s best to lay down an old sheet around the radiator. This will prevent any splash back from ruining your floors and skirting board.
Step 3: Sand the radiator down
Using light sandpaper, give the radiator a once over making sure to get rid of any unsightly lumps or bumps in the old paint. Your old sheet should protect the floors from any dust that may fall.
Step 4: Use the right paint
Make sure to use Satinwood paint when you’re painting a radiator, as it’s best suited to constant changes in temperature. Also, make sure to paint in the same direction as the grooves and don’t overload your paintbrush, otherwise you’ll drip everywhere.
Step 5: Give it time
Leave the paint to dry overnight and if it needs a second coat then repeat the last step above. Once it’s dry you can turn the heating back on.
Better to paint them now rather then when you actually need them.
