Galway man becomes the first man to conquer Croagh Patrick in a wheelchair

Alan Loughnane

Well done to all involved…

Galway native John Tobin, who has cerebral palsy, refused to let his illness get the better of him today when he became the first person to climb Croagh Patrick in a wheelchair.

With the help of family, friends, the Roscommon Civil Defence and a specially engineered chair, John completed a lifelong dream and climbed the holy mountain to raise money for charities that have helped him down through the years.

The 29-year-old’s family climb the mountain every year and this is the first time John has been able to accompany them on the climb.

John raised money for Brothers of Charity (Cherry House), IWA (ROC Day Centre & Cuisle Holiday Centre), Join our Boys, Ability West (Glenamaddy) and Sunshine Class (Creggs National School).

You can still donate money in aid of the climb by clicking here.

Once again, well done to all involved…
