Gary Lineker’s idea to take pressure off school children makes a lot of sense

Joe Harrington

Less stress, more success.

Gary Lineker is best-known for representing England 80 times as well as presenting Match of the Day on the BBC, but there’s a lot more to him than just football.

In a recent interview with Sport Magazine he talked about various topics from food, theatre, work and travel, but his views on education were the most interesting.

The father-of-four believes stress among young people could be eased if schools agreed to stop giving homework to children.

“Homework should be banned. All it does is drive a massive wedge between parents and children because you end up having to do it for them, and it’s stressful,” said Lineker.

“They get stressed and they don’t want to do it. They’re at school long enough as it is. Why do you have to come home and do two hours of homework?

“I don’t think many people probably agree with me. But a lot of parents would, especially if you’ve had four boys.”

It’s an interesting idea because schools in Finland stopped giving children homework and the result has been remarkably good. Lineker might be onto something.
