Gay Byrne has been criticised for failing to wear his seatbelt during a documentary with Terry Wogan that was aired on Sunday night.
The chairman of the Road Safety Authority (RSA) was forced to come up with answers as to why he was not wearing his belt in the back seat of a Mercedes S-Class while being driven around Dublin with Wogan.
Gaybo told the Irish Examiner that he thought he was wearing his belt and that most people know “this was not a real-life situation”.
“This was filmed months ago and in very cramped conditions,” Gaybo said.
“I have a tendency to hold onto the seatbelt. I don’t know why but that is, just the way it is… We were in and out of the car several times going from the GPO in Dublin to a hotel in Ballsbridge.
“I think most people are smart enough to know that this was not a real-life situation.”
