For those times when you want to look smart but still have that air of cool, we’ve got a smart casual look that never fails

The smart casual look is perfect for those times when a suit is too much, but togging out in your sweatpants and a hoodie isn’t an option either. It can be difficult to do, but if you put together the right outfit you’ll give off the “what, this? Oh, I just threw this together” vibe, but leave no one in any doubt that you’ve got style.

Recently JOE headed along to check out the Autumn/Winter collection at Arnotts and while we were there, editor Mike Sheridan was kitted out in the perfect smart casual outfit.

Farah, part of the Penguin family, are the lads behind this Vintage Burgundy Polo Shirt (€55) which is perfect both for pairing with this look, or wearing with something much more casual for a relaxed day off.

Layering is ideal for these colder months, not only will it keep you warm but it adds a great bit of style to your outfit. This AllSaints Cardigan (€98) is nice and light so that it won’t have you sweating with the heating on indoors, but makes you look that bit neater should you need to go more smart than casual.

The AllSaints Tailored Pants (€155) and the Hudson Brown Brogue (€115) complete the look. We’re big fans of a good brogue here in JOE, a shoe which started life in these fair isles. The holes were originally to let the water out given our unfavourable climate, but they’re just for show now and they look pretty good we must say.

Any man can use a hat in his wardrobe (we all loved Mr. Benn, right?) and it can be a real difference maker for what would be otherwise be a standard outfit. Don’t be afraid to take a bit of a chance on something like this Bailey grey bowler (€75), if you wear it with confidence you’ll pull it off.
