This is important stuff.

The Paternity Benefit Scheme is due to be introduced by the Department of Social Protection from the 1st of September.  It consists of a 2 week payment, payable to new fathers (or mothers in the context of same sex couples).

You can take Paternity Leave at any time from 1st September 2016 and Paternity Benefit is payable from 1st September 2016.

Dads working in PAYE jobs in the public and private sector, as well as the self-employed, will be paid €230 per week from the Department of Social Protection for a two-week period – as long as their child is born or adopted after September 1.

There are notification requirements from the would-be dads wishing to avail of the leave. The employee must notify their employer at least 4 weeks before the date they wish to take paternity leave.

A medical certificate setting out the expected date of birth or confirming the birth must be provided or, in the case of an adoption, proof of the date of placement.

There is a video which helps explain the ins and out of the scheme which you can see below
