Here’s how Irish the average English person is…

Carl Kinsella

Have you any Irish in you?

Given the close proximity, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of English people with Irish ancestry. Figures released by ancestry.com have revealed just how much of England is actually Irish.

The website offers a breakdown of Irish ancestry in England from region-to-region. Lancashire, the south border and the North West Midlands have the highest density of Irish DNA with the average person from those regions being at least a quarter Irish.

The Irish influences wanes the further west you go, with East and West Anglia having the smallest proportion of Irish DNA (15.4%-16.9%).

The overall Irishness-average across the country is roughly one-fifth, and the capital city London is just a little bit above the average at 21.8%.

This might explain the huge run on passports we saw in the wake of Brexit…
