Do you prefer coffee to tea? Here’s how much of Ireland agrees with you

What’s your poison?

Traditionally, it would be safe to say that Ireland loves a nice cup of tea.

However, with the unbelievable proliferation of Starbucks and other popular coffee shops across the country, some might argue that tea’s slightly more caffeinated cousin is putting up a fight.

The good people at The Economist have put together a map of the world based on whether or not a country prefers tea or coffee – and in general coffee has come out trumps.

That is not the case in Ireland, however, where tea reigns supreme by quite a distance. According to The Economist, 86.5% of Ireland would rather a mug of tea than of coffee, meaning just 13.5% of the country prefer a cup of joe. These figures come from Ireland’s national consumption of both products.

This trend does not reflect the preferences of the EU at large, which mainly prefers coffee. Another exception is our neighbours Great Britain – 78.4% of whom would prefer tea.
