Here’s where Ireland ranks on the list of countries with the highest cost of living in the world

Conor Heneghan

It might not surprise you to learn that we’re in the top 15.

Ireland ranks in 14th on the list of the countries with the highest cost of living in the world, according to MoveHub, a company that specialises in helping people move abroad.

Using data compiled by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the world’s largest database of user contributed data about cities and countries worldwide, MoveHub’s report ranked Ireland just ahead of the USA and just behind Denmark and Australia on a list of the most expensive countries in the world to live in.

Factors such as the prices of groceries, transportation, restaurants, utilities and rent are all taken into account to compile the CPI database.

Countries on the list were given a score based on a relative indicator of the cost of living in the country compared to New York – one of the world’s most expensive cities to live in – which was given a benchmark score of 100.

Bermuda came in at number one on the list with a score of 126.34 (meaning the cost of living there is 26.34% greater than it is in New York), followed by Switzerland, Hong Kong, Iceland and Singapore in the top five.

Ireland’s score came in at 58.59, significantly more expensive than the United Kingdom (51.03), which ranked in 29th overall, the first time it hasn’t featured in the top 20 since 2009.
