Hollywood Drive of Fame: Ferrari 250GT Spyder California

There have been quite a few cars made famous by Hollywood movies, so for this week’s Hollywood Drive of Fame we’re taking a look at the iconic Ferrari GT California from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Last time JOE pulled a sicky we got as far as our local pizza place, ordered a large Hawaiian and went home to binge on sitcoms. Hardly impressive if you consider Ferris’ day of debauchery included a trip around Chicago with his beautiful girlfriend, his neurotic best friend and this little beauty…

The stylish Ferrari was the backdrop to many of the great scenes in the film. From Ferris hustling the car out of his best mate Cameron’s garage, to the parking attendant ramping and racing around the city in it. There is no doubt about it, this car was one of the movie’s stars.

JOE has tried driving backwards to take miles off the clock and it doesn’t work. And that wasn’t the only bit of deception in John Hughes’ 1986 masterpiece.

It turns out Bueller wasn’t actually sick… and the Ferrari he drives wasn’t a Ferrari at all. The actual Ferrari 250GT wasn’t driven by any of the crew and was only used for still shots in the movie. Considering the fate it met, JOE doesn’t know whether to be pleased by this, or to feel betrayed.

The car used in the movie was a replica produced by specialised carmaker Modena called the Modena Spyder. Hughes and the producers decided that it would be a little crazy to have a wonderful Ferrari, which cost about $300,000 at the time (or almost $11,000,000 now), crash through a glass window and plummet to the ground. Fair enough…

Probably a wise move considering the Modena only set them back around $25,000 at the time.

Cameron shouldn’t have been so worried about clocking-up miles anyway, because their little jaunt helped raise the value of this particular vehicle to a price of $235,000 when it sold at auction last year.

JOE wouldn’t mind having a day off in either of these wonderful cars…
