How being a man has changed, Part 3: Hair

We’ve all had dodgy haircuts at some stage of our lives. Today, however, the haircut for the man has become as intricate and as complex as it is for the women.

In an image conscious society, the look is all important. Nothing dominates your image more than the look of your barnet. Many years ago, men didn’t really place too much emphasis on their hair, but as the years rolled on, Styles and looks became more and more outlandish and extravagant. We’ve come along way from the stone-age, or as some call it, the 1970s. Arsenal and Northern Ireland goalkeeping legend, Pat Jennings and his hairdo typified the era, and it was basically a lot of hair with a parting of some sorts thrown in for good measure.

Somewhere along the line, man discovered that you could do other things to your hair. You could cut it, style it, shape it, hell you could even condition it! The ’80s saw probably the most risqué haircuts known to mankind and thankfully, we’ve kept the hairstyles on a leash so to speak. What happened back then was tragic (this is, after all, the decade that spawned the mullet) and we should never allow our children and our children’s children to ever go down the route of Kajagoogoo and their ilk. Haircuts befitting of parrots are all very well, so long as you actually are a parrot.

Kajagoogoo

Fads come and go, but there is palpable relief that the styles of the ’80s are but a distant memory. The 1990s saw us regress a little bit back towards the ’60s and ’70s in everything from music to style, with the explosion of the ‘Madchester’ scene and bowl haircuts, like those sported by Inspiral Carpets, became de rigeur.

Boon And Hingley

The modern man today has a myriad of options when it comes to hairstyles. Whether it’s short, medium or long, you are now living in a society where it is acceptable to have your hair whatever way you want. That’s freedom folks, that’s freedom right there. Just don’t copy Kajagoogoo.

While hairstyles may have changed down through the years for us manfolk, one thing that hasn’t changed is Man Hunger, and for the last few decades, the answer has always been to satisfy our cravings at McDonald’s, so why not eat like a man and check out the options on offer on their menu.
