Why? Because we sit down when we do our number twos in the bathroom, that's why.
According to a book, Charming Bowels, by German author Giulia Enders, we should squat over the jacks as opposed to sitting on it while dumping our logs in the lake.
Enders reckons that the closure mechanism of the gut is not designed to “open the hatch completely” when we’re sitting down or standing up: it’s like a kinked hose, apparently.
Worse still, sitting on the toilet leads to a greater chance of piles and diverticulosis.
The book was released months ago, but Enders' revelations appear to have been flushed out again because of an interview published in The Guardian today; if the inner workings of your bowels is the type of thing you're into, then it will make for a fascinating read.
