This Irish dad was hit with major backlash over his son’s name
Picking a baby’s name is a difficult decision, but one that your family should support.
Some can be a little too outspoken about your choices and others will try to encourage you to pick names they adore.
It’s a major milestone for any parent and the last thing anyone wants to do is feel judged over their choice.
However, one Irish dad caused a major argument in his family when he revealed the name of his son.
The dad and his wife loved the name Oisin, but it also happens to be the name of his nephew.
The name Oisin is pretty popular so don’t be surprised if other parents opt for the moniker.
His sister wrote on Reddit, “My brother and his wife has as much right to name their child whatever they want. I do not own my name. I have no right to dictate to my brother what he names his kid.”
However, the sister explained that she and her husband had their hearts set on the name Oisin first.
“Since he and I were dating and started discussing our future we agreed that our son would have that name- Oisín.”
Her husband, who is from Galway, has always loved the traditional name especially because it reminds him of home.
The sister was stunned when she discovered her brother and sister-in-law chose the same Irish name
She shared, “Neither my family or my sister in-law have any other connection to Ireland. She got pregnant right around when I did and her son was born two months before ours.”
Her brother’s son was born before hers and they decided to call him Oisín Miguel.
Her son was born shortly after and she decided to call him Oisín Daniel.
The sister warned her brother and his wife that they would also call their son Oisin, but they were furious when she told them the news.
“She has flipped out that two cousins will have the same name. She is nuts because our family is Hispanic and half of our cousins are named Carlos or Camilla.”
The mum admitted, “She is trying to insist we call him by his middle name or change his name. I told her to piss off.”
“No one has the rights to a name”
“My mom is staying neutral but she was very surprised that my brother gave his son an Irish name he knew I was planning on using. She expected him to name him after our late father,” she added.
Reddit users agreed that the sister was not in the wrong and her brother and sister-in-law were overreacting.
One said, “You’ve been very clear and upfront about the name you chose for your son.”
Another added, “No one has the rights to a name, but honestly if your SIL knew you were going to do this, it’s *her* fault that she chose the same name and chose to get upset about it.”
