Irish stew ranked in Top 50 food experiences in the world

Rory Cashin

Who in your life makes the best stew?

A very big part of travelling or going on holiday is enjoying the local food, and apparently, those who travel here are big fans of our Irish stew.

In the new book, The Ultimate Eatlist ranked the top 500 foodie experiences from all over the world, based on the votes cast by all of the food-obsessed writers, bloggers and staff connected with travel experts Lonely Planet.

As per the Lonely Planet website, here are the top ten dishes and where in the world you can get them:

1. Pintxos in San Sebastián, Spain

2. Curry laksa in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

3. Sushi in Tokyo, Japan

4. Beef brisket in Texas, USA

5. Som tum in Bangkok, Thailand

6. Smørrebrød in Copenhagen, Denmark

7. Crayfish in Kaikoura, New Zealand

8. Bibimbap in Seoul, South Korea

9. Pizza Margherita in Naples, Italy

10. Dim sum in Hong Kong

The remaining 490 entries will be available in the book, but some details have emerged on three Irish entries, with Irish stew ranking the highest, at No. 47, with the Brazen Head in Dublin suggested as the best place to get it.

The dish is described in the books as “the definition of warming, hearty and filling. […] You can season the stew with salt but the flavour is best enhanced by eating it in one of those pubs, with one of those pints of Guinness, and friends.

“Many cultures locate the romance of food in hours of preparation and myriad ingredients; for the Irish, the romance is in the eating and whatever happens around it.”

The two other Irish entries are black pudding (No. 458 – suggested outlet: Egan family of Inch House B&B in Tipperary) and barmbrack (No. 496 – suggested outlet: Hansel and Gretel Bakery & Patisserie in Dublin).
