Fundraising campaign set up for Irish woman who needs to travel abroad for life-saving surgery

An Irish woman is travelling abroad to receive life-saving surgery after suffering a unique spinal injury.

Elizabeth McNicholas was diagnosed with a unique spinal condition in 2008, causing her internal organs to be crushed by her spine. The Dublin woman needs to travel to Istanbul, Turkey to avail of life-saving treatment that is not available in Ireland. Her family have been appealing for donations to fund Elizabeth's surgery and to save her life. On her GoFundMe page, they wrote: "Elizabeth is one of the nicest, kindest, caring people you would ever meet who's life has been robbed from her for the last 10 years. "These are years she will never get back." A former Camogie player and talented musician, Elizabeth is now in constant pain and unable to get out of bed. She requires a breathing machine while sleeping due to the pressure her spine is putting on her organs. Elizabeth's family have said that her doctor in Istanbul, Dr. Ahmet Alanay, is confident that the surgery will save her. "Despite (her condition) Elizabeth has a positive attitude and a great sense of humour. She is hopeful that surgery will be a success and save her life," they said. Elizabeth is travelling to Istanbul today for surgery, however, she is still in need of donations to fund further surgeries and her rehabilitation. Her family took to Facebook this morning to thank those who have helped for their support. They wrote: "We are on our way to Istanbul for surgery, a journey that would not have been possible without all your help and support. "We are truly overwhelmed with the response to our appeal over the past few days. Knowing that so many people are behind us makes everything that bit easier."
